Support Your Local Charity… Mine is the Chigwell Disabled Club

A Friendly Place to Meet

Everyone should support their local Charities, which often plug the gaps left by the ‘Big Charities’. I would like to introduce you to our Group [CDSG]. We are a band of enthusiastic people who came together around 9 years ago, when the Day Centre of our local Social Services Residential Home was closed down. This left members and volunteers with little or no access to any kind of support or social activities.

Since then CDSG have supported over 200 individuals across the four local Boroughs that we serve. We now train and work with special needs volunteers. We run two weekly activity sessions. In addition, we organise a number of trips and outings throughout each year. We seek to promote social inclusion, empowerment, independence and – above all – having a great time !

CDSG’s current and on-going Project is to set up a befriending / mentoring scheme whereby disabled people can support and work with each other in a safe and friendly environment. One of the key elements of this scheme is to support those former members who, for one reason or another, have become house-bound – these clients are often quite isolated and have little or no access to social activities.

Our current funding ended in April 2010 we had previously been funded by the Big Lottery but this stream has now ceased – they have told us that they no longer have the means to carry on supporting our types of project. This has come as a huge disappointment to everyone involved with the Group. We have worked very hard for a number of years to raise the Group’s profile; to promote our services; and to work towards best practice.

We have been able to promote our services and train approx. 75 volunteers – some with learning disabilities and mental health issues. We have provided advocacy and support to our members on a number of occasions. These include hospital visits, housing issues, and support and advice on benefits and transport.

Currently, the CDSG’s main expenditure covers salaries, transport, hire of Hall, insurance, travel expenses for the formal staff and for the volunteers, and additional costs such as the telephone, the Internet, marketing and promotions, stationery and postage.

Whilst donations are always most welcome, any help or support you can offer will be graciously received as at present we only have enough funds to continue for a few months more. We are particularly interested in attracting patrons who have a standing in the local community and can bring something to the Group to raise its profile.

We would love to tell you more but sometimes words are not enough – if you are able to spare some time then please come along to meet us; take a look at our work and discover a little more about us; talk to members and find out what a vital life-line to the outside world our activities provide.

For further information, please contact Lee-Ann on 07947-568 657.
If necessary, please leave a brief message so that we can get back to you.

I have supported our Local Charity for many years –
It truly is ‘a Friendly Place to Meet’

Internet Affiliate Marketing and the Wealthy Affiliates Learning Platform

I have just read a great, though quite long, article by Eddy Salomon about learning how to be an internet affiliate marketeer on his no-holds-barred Website:  http://www.workathomenoscams.com/2009/09/16/is-wealthy-affiliate-a-scam/

Knowledge doesn’t come cheap but it seems that the ‘college’ structure of learning platform. Wealthy Affiliates [WA] provides the necessary tools to learn about all aspects of this fascinating money-making opportunity. Rhoda, below, spells out the cost side. In his article Eddy points out the weaknesses as well as the strengths of WA. His main criticism focuses on the tendency towards information overload, but that must be weighed against many courses being based on a single theme padded out. You probably need a college education just to cope with the volume of material that is available

At the end of the article is a string of interesting feedback points, including Rhoda’s:

@banakd:
I cannot agree more with what Banakd had to say. I too, signed up under WA’s $1.00 a week promotional. It is true that there is a ton of information, from A to Z both in the Share Zone and in the forums, BUT as Banakd has so clearly stated, the information is NOT organized. Any “newbie” would be totally confused and overwhelmed. As in “all roads lead to Rome”, so there are many ways and methods to Affiliate Marketing. I would advise anyone who is thinking of this to research just as you would any business you are thinking of going into — BEFORE you sign up for a $29.99 or $39.00 a mo. pop. Do a search of Affiliate Marketing on Google (free), read the Warrior Forum (free), go to Amazon and buy a good book on Internet Affiliate Marketing (NICHE Internet Marketing by Leigh Burke is a great one), sign up for free on some internet marketers list — such as Bum Marketing Methods.com by Travis Sago and PotPieGirl.com by Jennifer and get a solid feel for what Internet Marketing involves. You are going to have to decide which method you are going to use — at least to start out with. Will it be Article Marketing? Will it be using Squidoo lenses? Will it be via blogging or a web site? Or, as Eddy has detailed on one of his MySurvey videos, will it be with posting on forums? There are free ways to Affiliate Market — perhaps you should try them first and see if you have any success with those methods. I personally feel that there is a lot of good, solid information at WA, BUT, as Banakd has stated it is a better value for those with a good grasp (and some experience) of what Internet Affiliate Marketing is all about. I’m not saying that a “newbie” can’t have success with WA. I’m just saying that it would be a good idea to inform yourself before you join up with a costly program like WA — $29.99 x 12 = $359.88 or $39.00 a mo. or $39.00 x 12 = $468.00.

Achieve Rapid and Efficient Typing Speeds – Intro

It’s as Easy as ABC – ‘abc’ is the TAG for the word ‘Alphabet’ – Why type 8 letters when you can just Type 3 – Easy?  It’s as easy as ABC !

*TYPEAHEAD* is a piece of software that allows for auto-text creation of whole words from short, simple TAGS. In the example, above, typing ‘abc_’ (including the space at the end) generates the word ‘alphabet_’ – 9 characters – a saving of 5 characters [56%] with the added advantage of no room for typos or for spelling mistakes.

*TYPEAHEAD* is aimed primarily at disabled people with poor dexterity and others with limited typing abilities, who wish to reduce the Time and Effort involved in their typing by up to 50% [See the Slideshow at Full Screen of the Photos Page for Examples]. This is done by typing short, logical abbreviated TAGs in place of the commonest words and word combinations like ‘is a’ and ‘of the’, etc. The System will also help by greatly reducing typos and by avoiding spellings mistakes.

Smarten Your Typing Speed

Photos in the Library show examples of the output from using this Utility and the significant savings [of up to 50%] in the keying input required.

Seems Like a Lot of Effort for Little Reward to Me ?

We cannot all be good typists – like all things it takes skill, effort and time to achieve, even if it is achievable. For many disabled people the effort and the time needed to accomplish a given task is completely disproportionate to the skill required and anything that can be done to reduce the latter two is worth a second look. The Utility offered here reduces the number of keystrokes required to produce the commonest words and popular word-combinations**, and totally eliminates the effort required to do complicated tasks like using the ‘shift’-key in combination with other keys.

** a good word-combination example is ‘from_the_’ which is 9 keystrokes long including the spaces [represented by underscores] – the software generates this end result by simply typing in ‘frte_’, which is 5 keystrokes long and represents a 44% saving in time and effort. Again, ‘is_a_’ [5 keystrokes] is produced using ‘za_’ 3 keystrokes, and so on.

Just What are these TAGs ?

TAGs are abbreviations for words. Each word has its own TAG. TAGs are built up in a logical manner so that learning the TAGs of the most common words [300, say – see at the end of this page] becomes simple, quick and even fun ! Where possible TAGs are made up of the first letter of the word (whether vowel or consonant) plus the next 0 – 4 consonants plus the standard endings (see below). Double consonants are replaced with single where this would not lead to ambiguity. The commonest endings and add-ins are as follows:

‘b’ for ‘able’, ‘b’, ‘bb’ or ‘ible’; ‘d’ for ‘d’, ‘dd’, ‘ed’; ‘e’ for ‘e’, ‘ea’, ‘ee’ (as in vendee); ‘f’  for ‘f’, ‘ff’, ‘ful’, ‘ough’; ‘g’ for ‘g’, ‘gg’, ‘ing’; ‘k’ for ‘ck’, ‘k’, ‘kk’; ‘ l ‘ for ‘al’, ‘all’, ‘ial’, ‘less’, ‘l’, ‘ll’, ‘ual’; ‘ls’ or ‘lss’ for ‘less’; ‘ly’ for ‘ily’, ‘ly’; ‘m’ for ‘m’, ‘mm’, ‘*ment’; ‘n’ for ‘ication’, ‘n’, ‘nn’, ‘*ness’; ‘*sion’, ‘*ssion’, ‘*tion’; ‘nc’ for *nce’; ‘ns’ or ‘nss’ for ‘ness’; ‘r’ for ‘er’, ‘or’, ‘r’, ‘rr’; ‘ry’ for ‘ary’, ‘ry’; ‘s’ for ‘es’, ‘s’, ‘ss’; ‘sh’ for ‘ish’; ‘st’ for ‘est’; ‘ty’ for ‘ity’, ‘ty’; ‘us’ for ‘ious’, ‘ous’; ‘x’ for ‘ex’ (at the beginning of words), ‘x’; ‘y’ for ‘i’, ‘igh’, ‘*ly’, ‘*ry’, ‘*ty’, ‘y’; ‘yy’ for ‘ily’, ‘ity’, and ‘z’ for ‘ise’, ‘s’ [for the hard ‘s’ or to avoid ambiguity], ‘z’, ‘zz’.

Some Numeric Add–Ins / Endings

Some more (contrived!) add-ins and endings are numeric or symbols :  ‘0’ (a nought) for ‘au’, ‘aught’ or ‘ought’ [as in ‘nought’ represented by ‘n0’ and ‘ought’ represented by ’00’]; ‘1’ for ‘one’, ‘won’; ‘2’ for ‘to’, ‘too’, ‘two’; ‘4’ for ‘for’, ‘fore’, ‘four’; ‘8’ for ‘aight’, ‘ait’, ‘ate’; ‘9’ for ‘ign’, ‘ine’, ‘yne’; and ’10’ for ‘ten’, ‘ton’ –  [examples – ‘2mc’ for ‘too much’, ‘b4’ for ‘before’ and  ‘4g10’ for ‘forgotten’, ‘tr4’ for ‘therefore’ ].

Other Benefits – Avoiding the SHIFT key, Spellchecking, etc.

Some people have great difficulty with using ‘Shift-key’ Combinations to make Capital letters and other ‘upper-case’ marks. To get around this each upper-case character can be accessed by depressing the back-slash key ‘\’ followed by the lower-case equivalent, so ‘\d’ gives ‘D’; ‘\3’ gives ‘£’ and ‘\ / ‘ gives ‘?’, etc.

As the commonest words are derived directly from their own TAGs, there is no room for Spelling errors there. Many words, of course, do not have recognised TAGs, so it is always possible that they could be mis-spelt on entry. However, the system additionally contains over 5,000 fairly common mis-spellings words and their automatic corrections. These mis-spellings also include corrections for many of the commonest typographical errors [typos] – like ‘teh’ for ‘the’.

The Commonest 300 Words (with their TAGs) – Summary:

The Commonest 300 words contain around 3008 characters [inc the space at the end of each word]. These words are represented by short Tags containing 1654 characters [inc the space at the end of each Tag]. Using these Short Tags thus represents a theoretical saving in Typing Time and Effort of around 45%.

‘A1 Mailing and Typing Sevices’ is a Scam – Don’t send your £30

WARNING – I was suckered into a scam advert accepted by http://www.webs.com – as legit. Please note that ‘A1 Mailing and Typing Services’ is a scam known to the Police and to several Trading Standards Officers. Send them £30.00 Surety Fee, like I did, and you have kissed that £30 good-bye. Why do the hosting companies not ban them from advertising on these sites?

The man behind A1 is rude and ignorant and also trades under the names http://www.mailingortyping.co.uk and http://www.imlookingforajob.co.uk. Feel free to copy this warning right across the entire Web network – for full details and investigation see http://www.scam.com/showthread.php?t=121764

A1 M+T has now been joined by a new undertaking trading under the name “Good Partners [sic] Mailing and Trading” – also not to be touched with a barge-pole.
