It’s as Easy as ABC – ‘abc’ is the TAG for the word ‘Alphabet’ – Why type 8 letters when you can just Type 3 – Easy? It’s as easy as ABC !
*TYPEAHEAD* is a piece of software that allows for auto-text creation of whole words from short, simple TAGS. In the example, above, typing ‘abc_’ (including the space at the end) generates the word ‘alphabet_’ – 9 characters – a saving of 5 characters [56%] with the added advantage of no room for typos or for spelling mistakes.
*TYPEAHEAD* is aimed primarily at disabled people with poor dexterity and others with limited typing abilities, who wish to reduce the Time and Effort involved in their typing by up to 50% [See the Slideshow at Full Screen of the Photos Page for Examples]. This is done by typing short, logical abbreviated TAGs in place of the commonest words and word combinations like ‘is a’ and ‘of the’, etc. The System will also help by greatly reducing typos and by avoiding spellings mistakes.

Seems Like a Lot of Effort for Little Reward to Me ?
We cannot all be good typists – like all things it takes skill, effort and time to achieve, even if it is achievable. For many disabled people the effort and the time needed to accomplish a given task is completely disproportionate to the skill required and anything that can be done to reduce the latter two is worth a second look. The Utility offered here reduces the number of keystrokes required to produce the commonest words and popular word-combinations**, and totally eliminates the effort required to do complicated tasks like using the ‘shift’-key in combination with other keys.
** a good word-combination example is ‘from_the_’ which is 9 keystrokes long including the spaces [represented by underscores] – the software generates this end result by simply typing in ‘frte_’, which is 5 keystrokes long and represents a 44% saving in time and effort. Again, ‘is_a_’ [5 keystrokes] is produced using ‘za_’ 3 keystrokes, and so on.

Just What are these TAGs ?
TAGs are abbreviations for words. Each word has its own TAG. TAGs are built up in a logical manner so that learning the TAGs of the most common words [300, say – see at the end of this page] becomes simple, quick and even fun ! Where possible TAGs are made up of the first letter of the word (whether vowel or consonant) plus the next 0 – 4 consonants plus the standard endings (see below). Double consonants are replaced with single where this would not lead to ambiguity. The commonest endings and add-ins are as follows:
‘b’ for ‘able’, ‘b’, ‘bb’ or ‘ible’; ‘d’ for ‘d’, ‘dd’, ‘ed’; ‘e’ for ‘e’, ‘ea’, ‘ee’ (as in vendee); ‘f’ for ‘f’, ‘ff’, ‘ful’, ‘ough’; ‘g’ for ‘g’, ‘gg’, ‘ing’; ‘k’ for ‘ck’, ‘k’, ‘kk’; ‘ l ‘ for ‘al’, ‘all’, ‘ial’, ‘less’, ‘l’, ‘ll’, ‘ual’; ‘ls’ or ‘lss’ for ‘less’; ‘ly’ for ‘ily’, ‘ly’; ‘m’ for ‘m’, ‘mm’, ‘*ment’; ‘n’ for ‘ication’, ‘n’, ‘nn’, ‘*ness’; ‘*sion’, ‘*ssion’, ‘*tion’; ‘nc’ for *nce’; ‘ns’ or ‘nss’ for ‘ness’; ‘r’ for ‘er’, ‘or’, ‘r’, ‘rr’; ‘ry’ for ‘ary’, ‘ry’; ‘s’ for ‘es’, ‘s’, ‘ss’; ‘sh’ for ‘ish’; ‘st’ for ‘est’; ‘ty’ for ‘ity’, ‘ty’; ‘us’ for ‘ious’, ‘ous’; ‘x’ for ‘ex’ (at the beginning of words), ‘x’; ‘y’ for ‘i’, ‘igh’, ‘*ly’, ‘*ry’, ‘*ty’, ‘y’; ‘yy’ for ‘ily’, ‘ity’, and ‘z’ for ‘ise’, ‘s’ [for the hard ‘s’ or to avoid ambiguity], ‘z’, ‘zz’.
Some Numeric Add–Ins / Endings
Some more (contrived!) add-ins and endings are numeric or symbols : ‘0’ (a nought) for ‘au’, ‘aught’ or ‘ought’ [as in ‘nought’ represented by ‘n0’ and ‘ought’ represented by ’00’]; ‘1’ for ‘one’, ‘won’; ‘2’ for ‘to’, ‘too’, ‘two’; ‘4’ for ‘for’, ‘fore’, ‘four’; ‘8’ for ‘aight’, ‘ait’, ‘ate’; ‘9’ for ‘ign’, ‘ine’, ‘yne’; and ’10’ for ‘ten’, ‘ton’ – [examples – ‘2mc’ for ‘too much’, ‘b4’ for ‘before’ and ‘4g10’ for ‘forgotten’, ‘tr4’ for ‘therefore’ ].
Other Benefits – Avoiding the SHIFT key, Spellchecking, etc.
Some people have great difficulty with using ‘Shift-key’ Combinations to make Capital letters and other ‘upper-case’ marks. To get around this each upper-case character can be accessed by depressing the back-slash key ‘\’ followed by the lower-case equivalent, so ‘\d’ gives ‘D’; ‘\3’ gives ‘£’ and ‘\ / ‘ gives ‘?’, etc.
As the commonest words are derived directly from their own TAGs, there is no room for Spelling errors there. Many words, of course, do not have recognised TAGs, so it is always possible that they could be mis-spelt on entry. However, the system additionally contains over 5,000 fairly common mis-spellings words and their automatic corrections. These mis-spellings also include corrections for many of the commonest typographical errors [typos] – like ‘teh’ for ‘the’.
The Commonest 300 Words (with their TAGs) – Summary:
The Commonest 300 words contain around 3008 characters [inc the space at the end of each word]. These words are represented by short Tags containing 1654 characters [inc the space at the end of each Tag]. Using these Short Tags thus represents a theoretical saving in Typing Time and Effort of around 45%.
